A Dane County judge has ruled to assign a special prosecutor to prosecute Ridglan Farms for criminal animal cruelty. The judge found “probable cause” that Ridglan broke Wisconsin’s animal cruelty laws and called out the local DA for failing to act.
This ruling is incredibly meaningful. It sends a powerful message that cruelty to animals, no matter who’s responsible, will no longer be ignored. For far too long, places like Ridglan Farms have gotten away with unimaginable abuse. This decision marks a turning point—not just for the dogs who suffered there, but for how our society views and responds to the treatment of all animals. It’s a step toward a future where the abuse of any animal is no longer accepted or tolerated.

For me, this is personal. Seven years ago, I adopted Julie, a one-year-old dog who had spent her entire life in a tiny metal cage at Ridglan Farms. She didn’t have a bed or a blanket—just a metal grate to stand and sleep on. She didn’t even have a name, just numbers tattooed on her ear and thigh. She was so traumatized she couldn’t even walk in a straight line—only in circles. She was scared of everything, even the smallest noises. Over time, with lots of love, Julie improved. She is usually happy and affectionate, but she will never be a normal dog. She’s the reason I started the Better Science Campaign.
This victory wouldn’t have been possible without the tireless work of groups like Dane for Dogs and The Simple Heart, who have been fighting for justice for the animals at Ridglan Farms. I’m so grateful to Wayne, Paul, Eva, and everyone who worked to document the abuse and rescue dogs like Julie. This is a win for them, for Julie, and for all the animals who deserve better.
There’s still a long way to go, but today, we celebrate. Justice for animals is finally on the horizon, and together, we’re making a difference.
