We spoke with Tammy O’Shea Tinkham, owner of the “Christmas Dog House” in Danvers. MA.
BLR: What motivated you to start rescuing beagles and create your annual “Christmas Dog House” display?
Tammy: “Along with Boxers, I’ve always also done rescue so when I heard about the big Envigo rescue, I immediately reached out to find out how my husband and I could help. We ended up taking in Penny, that came to us pregnant. She had her 7 puppies with me as her foster mom. We then adopted her and her son whom I named Spyder. I found homes for the rest of the pups.
Tammy: “The following year we fostered and adopted Muffin, who came to us directly out of an experiment lab! Severely traumatized but making progress everyday and enjoying his freedom!”
BLR: How do you get the dogs to pose for your photos?
Tammy: lol just lots of cookies in my pocket, a good “stay” command and quick picture taking. All of my dogs have always been great posers, they see the costumes and camera come out and they all jump to the couch lol
I do really need to have someone video that process sometime, it’s pretty funny!
Tammy: “From left, Spyder and his momma Penny (Envigo puppy breeder for 6 years) and then Muffin down in the front. Muffin came from Marshall Bioresources and was sent to a medical lab in PA for 4 years.”
“Penny was very traumatized. We estimate she’s had 10-11 litters of puppies and having them treated the way they were and then having all those pups stolen from you by the monsters that work there and even having lots die right in the cage with her SO, she is very timid and also has a lot of health issues. Spyder wasn’t born there but he is still a little wimpy! He’s a riot and goofy and fun. He’s pretty smart, too! I do agility and scent work with him. And poor Muffin. He’s probably the most traumatized dog I’ve ever seen!!”
BLR: Thank you for sharing your photos and stories Tammy. Your dogs are living their best lives. Happy Holidays!
